temescal

Train crossing Lake Temescal. This is an unusual shot because this area was later filled in and the trestle was no longer needed. If you go to Lake Temescal now, it is a little difficult to figure out exactly where this was (at least for me).

If you walk along the east side of the lake (beach side) about half way between the north and south end is a large culvert coming into the lake and I think that's where this filled portion of the lake was. In the old days when this picture was taken Lake Temescal and its dam were several feet higher then what they are now, and many of the hills to the east came down almost all the way to the lake. Today, while the SN right of way is in the very same location as you see in this picture (without the bridge) now there is the Warren Freeway paralelling the old right of way just a couple of feet on the other side of this bridge over filled area of the lake.

Perhaps the lake was bigger back then? With the freeway came the cars and the parking lot. Could this area now be under the parking lot? My dad worked for Dept. of Trans back then in the East Bay, he'd know too bad he died 20 years ago. He never mentioned the SN was once there even though we went up that way all the time as a kid.
