Here is the current day shot of the location of the original tunnel from Alameda - Contra Costa counties. Taken 5/17/04. The sign says "No Trespassing. Violators Will be Prosecuted". Take a good look at this area including the plaque as it's hig

This lot is now for sale! Unique opportunity to own land with a possible fantastic wine or document storage area all for a little digging (unless the entire tunnel is totally caved in). How about a bomb shelter? Anyway, $299,000 buys you this .6 acre plot of land. Not sure if the plaque and flagpole is included.

Can anyone tell me what the exact location of this tunnel is? I'm a biker, and the old tunnel intrigues me. Does anyone know if there are any plans to redo the tunnel for light traffic? Seems it might be another option versus an additional Caldecott bore.

Good news - I went out here on Saturday, 8/13/05 and there is no house on the site, no construction and not even a "For Sale" sign. The tunnel marker/flagpole is still there too.

Bob, I don't think so. Instead, this is the west portal of the caved-in road tunnel that was built about 1915 or so, if I recall correctly. The OA&E/SN tunnel was roughly parallel and about 2 miles south.

It appears this is the old "Oakland, Antioch & Eastern/Sacramento Northern" tunnel. Skyline Road runs above it.

Because any new bore must have a Bike/Ped access plan, one of the options is to use the old (Kennedy) tunnel for bicycle and pedestrians. The Orinda side is still intact, and the tunnel can be accessed from that side. Those that know, say that the orig. tunnel is largely intact, and can be put to use with minimal new construction, mostly on the Oakland side.
