Sacramento_Capitol_Ave_Xing

This is an arial view of the mainline entering the Tower Bridge in Sacramento. Notice the track enters down the center of the bridge, blocking all traffic entering into Sacramento on West Capitol Ave. (formerly M St.).

The current tower bridge replaced an original bridge in the 1930's, known as "The M Street Bridge". There is a picture of the bridge on this website. While I am not sure of the date, the name of M Street was later changed to Capitol Ave. This shot is of a train crossing Capitol Ave. (formerly known as M Street) on the West side of the Tower Bridge. When the tracks were removed from the bridge (mid 1960's?), Capitol Ave. was realligned and the current tracks to Woodland were moved south. There is currently a freeway where the train is in this shot.

M Street was only on the Sacramento side of the river. The roadway shown with the backedup traffic is most likely Highway 40 and not West Capitol Ave, especially if this picture was taken 1954 or later.
