Photo caption says Temescal cut, but I'm not so sure that's right. I can't picture where this is. 1948. Photo courtesy of Roger K. Heller

If you look carefully, the train is exiting the West Portal of the tunnel, near Havens. You can see the distinctive tunnel bracing, the block signal, and the summit brake test sign in the center of the photo.

At first I thought this was the eastern end of the Melin Cut too, but now I have to agree with Don and jbrad that this is just west of the tunnel portal with the train headed for Havens. The scenes are very similar though.

That is 'Melin Cut' between Montclair and Havens Station, this is where the line comes out of Shepherd Canyon. In the picture the train will be passing the Snake Road bridge a very short distance past this.

This is definitely coming out of the tunnel into Shepard Canyon. If you look closely, you will see a PG&E transmission tower directly above the panograph at the top of the hill. Picture #9 has the same tower. The ledge just below the tower is Skyline.

I disagree. The tracks coming out of the west end of the tunnel were straight. This is the east end. Compare the tracks, the cattle guard and the shanty with the other photos here.

Jim: This most definitely is the WEST portal of the tunnel. The EAST portal had a concrete facade with a date stamped on the top. The EAST portal also DID NOT HAVE metal bracing accross the top. You must be thinking of a different photo. The WEST portal did not have a shack or a cattleguard that I am aware of. The EAST portal did. Perhaps the signal is confusing you. There were block signals on the EAST side, and only a distant signal on the WEST side.

Yeah this is definitely the WEST side. The east side has Pinehurst right above the portal and a giant rock face above Pinehurst. There is no distant view like this on the east side.
